LABORER (FITNESS)

LOCATION: This position is located in the Fitness & sports Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Station Mayport, Florida, and will be perform work for the Fitness & Sports Division, which includes the Gymnasium, Surfside Fitness Center, Mayport Bowling Center, Pool and Beach facilities.

MAJOR DUTIES:  Maintain grounds around the facilities and patio area by picking up and removing trash, sweeping, washing areas, cutting grass, raking, weeding, watering, trimming hedges, edging walks, as required, utilizing gas, electric or manual powered equipment.

Assist maintenance personnel in the performance of special projects such as painting, landscaping, carpet cleaning, and VIP visit preparations. Load and unload materials by hand or by using hand trucks or dollies.

Set up and break down table and chair settings, serving tables/equipment, audio/video equipment, lecterns and other furniture as directed by the Facility Manager.

Wash, strip, wax, buff and vacuum floors, throughout the facility, using a variety of cleaning solutions and power equipment. Maintain equipment (i.e. cleans, oils, replaces brushes, etc.). Wash windows, walls, light fixtures and mirrors. Dust furniture, polish woodwork and metal fixtures. Clean AC vents in the ceiling on ladder or step stools.

Clean toilets, wash basins and floors of lavatories in a sanitary manner. Ensure that paper and soap dispensers are fully stocked.

Conduct periodic lavatory checks for cleanliness/supplies and cleans as required.

Scrub and scour worktables. Clean debris traps in sinks. Remove garbage to collection points, ensuring that recyclable materials are sorted and disposed of correctly.

Replace light bulbs and perform other minor maintenance duties, such as unclogging sinks and toilets, where applicable. Report equipment malfunctions or facility areas requiring repair to Facility Manager.

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE

 

Ability to follow oral instructions requiring several tasks or processes. Knowledge of cleaning supplies in order to ensure their proper and safe use. Knowledge of cleaning techniques required to comply with sanitation regulations. Ability to use heavy powered cleaning equipment, i.e. floor, buffers. Ability to use hand tools to perform minor maintenance. Ability to use landscaping equipment such as: mowers, hedgers, trimmers and blowers. Work with heavy power equipment requires continual care and attention to avoid accidents and to finish the work properly. Prior work experience is required.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Exerts very heavy physical effort, frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 70 lbs., operating power mowers on grades, towing trailers, pushing heavy wheelbarrow loads of dirt, sand or playground fill, raking and shoveling dirt or sand, and using a pallet jack to move materials and equipment. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work performed indoors is in adequately lighted, heated and ventilated building. However, work areas may be uncomfortably warm and noisy, such as in the galley or storeroom. Exposure to minor cuts, bruises, burns, slippage on wet floors, and falls from ladders. Skin irritation due to daily exposure to cleaning solutions, as well as fumes from cleaning solutions. Outside duties may expose the incumbent to inclement or extremely hot or cold weather conditions. Work in and around hedges, bushes, and yard debris exposed to crawling and flying insects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Knowledge of safe and efficient operating techniques of various large equipment and power tools: (Operates a variety of power equipment to include, but not limited to: posthole diggers, blowers, weed eaters, power washers, mowers, box trucks with lift gate, etc.)  Ability to operate and control riding mowers on slopes which requires constant attention to working space and environment.  Ability to safely operate equipment around buildings, walls, trees, fence lines, banks and hillsides, trenches, curbs, rocks and other visible obstacles. Ability to operate various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift/lower, adjust, engage/disengage components or attached devices.  Knowledge and skill using hand tools and other equipment such as: shovels, rakes, hammers, bars, saws, axes, loppers, wrenches, brushes, brooms, ladders, banding equipment, and pallet jacks. Ability to complete assignments involving several tasks by following detailed processes which require remembering directions, sequences, following simple drawings, etc. Ability to follow general instructions or read simple drawings to perform tasks requiring significant manual skill.
