POSITION: COOK, NA-7404-05
PAY: $12.26/hourly starting day rate
LOCATION: Ocean Breeze Conference & Catering Center, Hospitality Division, MWR Department.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: A flexible employee is one who serves in either a continuing or temporary (time limited) position, on a scheduled or unscheduled (as needed or intermittent) basis, up to 40 hours per week. Flexible employees are not eligible to participate in the CNIC benefit programs, nor are they entitled to earn or use leave including military leave, court leave, sick or annual leave.
WORK Schedule: Rotating, averaging no more than 29 hours per week, to include days, nights and weekends. Work schedule is dependent upon the events planned by management.
AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The public within the Jacksonville Florida commuting area and Spouse Preference eligible candidates.
DUTIES: The incumbent prepares and serves a wide variety of full course meals according to customer requested orders, or scheduled menus. Grills items such as chops, poultry, steaks, turning as required until adequately done. Cooks vegetables, prepares special soups, sauces and dressings, according to recipes, measuring and weighing ingredients when required. Places cooked food in serving dishes or on steam and food carts in a manner that is appealing to the eye. Ensures group orders are served simultaneously. In absence of the Catering Manager, provides leadership to lower level Food Service Workers and may assist in their training. Keep grills, stoves, appliances and working area in a neat and clean manner in accordance with sanitation regulations. Ensures foods are properly stored and marked in accordance with regulations. May assist in taking inventory and/or receiving stock. Ensures appropriate documentation is properly completed for mess transfers. At the end of shift, ensures kitchen is properly cleaned, all foods cleared and properly stored, all trash and garbage disposed of, and all stoves and appliances are turned off. Notifies supervisor or Club Operations Assistant of problems encountered or appliances which are not functioning properly. May serve as chef on a banquet serving line. May be required to occasionally perform other duties within the Mess.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must show through previous training and experience that he/she possesses the knowledge’s, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Applications will be reviewed against the following elements: Ability to read and follow complicated recipes, and to combine ingredients to prepare full course meals. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Knowledge of food characteristics in order to determine freshness, quality and when foods are cooked to desired consistency. Ability to operate food preparation appliances such as a food slicer, microwave oven, blender, etc. Must pass a physical examination, obtain a health cad, and pass a Food Service Sanitation Course and a national background screening.
Note: Must have a driver’s license and reliable transportation, as public transportation is limited and not available at night.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical activities include, but are not limited to standing, walking, bending, turning, stooping, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling and light lifting. Some activities are prolonged in nature. The employee will at times lift up to 45 pounds unassisted, heavier items are with assistance. Incumbent has exposure to extreme temperatures, due to steam and heat from cooking/dishwashing as well as walk-in refrigerators/freezers. Working area is subject to noise. The employee is subject to minor cuts, bruises and burns.

2. Military Spouse Preference (MSP): Qualifying spouses eligible for MSP are spouses of an active duty military member of the U.S. Armed Forces, including members of the National Guard or Reserves on active duty. The marriage must have occurred before the military member received official permanent change of station (PCS) orders to the installation listed above. MSP is applicable only when applying for NAF positions at the NF-03 and below and equivalent craft and trade (CT) positions.
To claim this preference, you MUST:
- Submit sponsor’s PCS orders to installation you are applying for; AND
- If you are not indicated as a spouse on the PCS orders, you MUST submit proof of marriage prior to PCS.
3. Veteran’s Preference/Gold Star Veteran's Preference: Qualifying military veterans, and spouses/parents of deceased veterans shall be given employment preference over non-preference applicants if they are equally qualified. Preference applicable for positions open to external candidates.
To claim Veteran's preference, you MUST:
- Submit a copy of your DD-214 (member 4 copy); AND
- Submit completed SF15 from the Veterans Administration (VA); AND
- Submit any other supporting documentation (disability, official statements, proof of service, etc.)
- To claim Gold Star Veteran's preference, you MUST:
- Submit completed SF-15 from the Veterans Administration (VA); AND
- Submit a legible copy of DD-1300; AND
- Submit any other supporting documentation (official statements, document of service, court decree, etc.).
Qualifying applicants with preferences are considered in the order listed above. Then all other qualifying applicants are considered. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ALL OF THE REQUIRED AND APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS MAY RESULT IN YOU BEING DISQUALIFIED.
**ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY: Military regulations require that you obtain a special request authorization (NAVPERS 1336/3) prior to being accepted for outside employment. If employment is offered, you cannot begin work until this chit is supplied to the NAF Personnel Office.
